What to expect: Exposed brick, local artists and lots of props are featured in Bari's new TriBeCa studio. The MACRO class is the signature workout, which includes cardio dance sequences, muscle sculpting, band resistance, barre work and weights. Save your calves and don't forget your sneakers. Towels and water bottles are available for use during class.
Our take: It's no secret that in the last 2 years ballet inspired workouts have sprouted up like yoga studios and we've taken our share (Figure 4, Bar Method, BarWorks). There have been hits and misses along the way, but for us, Bari is definitely a weekly obsession! In the 8 return visits since we've discovered the studio, no BariMACRCO workout has been the same. Each class starts out with a warm up and 20 minutes of cardio dance sequences. Then it's onto resistance work with thera-bands that are mounted onto the ceiling, think TRX. Follow that up with some barre work, Pilates mat work, free weights or any combination that the instructor is feeling that day. Melody a former dancer and personal trainer, who we swear lives at the studio, teaches almost 20 classes a week. She keeps the room upbeat, fast paced and cheers you on without coming across like an annoying aerobics instructor or drill sergeant. If you're looking for more hands on adjustments or form correction, try to schedule a class or private session with founder Alexandra Perez. It's the runner's high that keeps us coming back and the intimate class size that makes us feel comfortable. - Linden Schaffer
